The BD ATC Pilot is a single rope geometry assisted belay device with enhanced braking. It gives smooth payout of rope combined with extra braking performance for sport and indoor climbing.
The ATC Pilot threads the rope and is held the same way as a standard ATC, so feels familiar in use.
On holding a fall the rope and belay krab move up the channel in the device, shortening the angle of the rope in the device, thus increasing the friction and holding power. This gives a nice dynamic "catch" and reduces the impact force on the leader.
This type of belay device is tried and tested right back to the original Wild Country "SRC" (Single Rope Controller). Similar modern units are the Mammut Smart and the Climbing Technology "Click Up".
