Commonly known as a Jumar - very simple and safe way of ascending ropes but a tad heavy for the alps. One is often required for ascending fixed ropes on guided Himalayan peaks - in which case you should choose a right-hand one if you are right-handed and a left-hand one if you are left-handed.
The Ascension features an overmoulded grip (ie it wraps right round) and ergonomic upper part for a comfortable and powerful grip when pulling with one or two hands. It also has a wide lower hole for easily attaching two karabiners (for a lanyard and footloop).
