The unusual name Sea to Summit arose when Tim Macartney-Snape in 1984, having been the first Australian, along with Greg Mortimer, to climb Mount Everest (via a new route on the North Face and without oxygen to boot!), was challenged by a friend to climb the peak properly, starting at sea level. This he achieved in 1990, solo, and again without oxygen, walking from the Bay of Bengal - the first time this had been done. On returning home, he teamed up with a friend Roland Tyson, who had made some bags for the expedition, and Sea to Summit was born.
